This account of the three great kingdoms of medieval Africa: Ghana, Mali and Songhay seeks to dispel ignorance and distortion in previous versions of these lost empires. It gives a scholarly yet accessible account of the rise and fall of the great trading empires built on gold, salt and later on slavery. It is well illustrated with maps, photographs of people, archaeological evidence and artefacts, and has a detailed bibliography and notes on sources.
