Who is King? The diversity of the African continent is well represented here with stories from Ethiopia, Morocco, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Malawi and Zimbabwe. As well as short fables about the origins of animal features or habits, there are moral tales where animals assume a range of human characteristics - from wisdom and kindness, to greed, cunning, laziness, and self-importance. Other stories - often with a magical twist - celebrate the bravery and intelligence of women: Unanana has to battle an enormous one-tusked elephant that has swallowed her children, a Miller's daughter must outwit a tyrannical Sultan, a grief-stricken woman trains a mouse to be a helper and surrogate companion for her children lost to famine. Piet Grobler's brilliantly-coloured illustrations are a delight, often depicting animals in patterned clothing, pointing up the comic parallels with human behaviours, and elsewhere softening the darker elements of stories which touch on famine, cruelty and animal predation.
