This gripping and moving contemporary novel reflects an authentically diverse urban community as it intertwines the lives of 12 year old Aisha, a Somalian refugee living with her white foster mother; Zak, also 12, who is struggling to cope with his parents' divorce; Iona, a young, homeless Big Issue Seller with a troubled past and Elder, a homeless, aged bag lady. Mr and Mrs Kalsi, the Sikh couple who run the local newsagent shop provide a focal point in the story for these seemingly disparate characters. When Zak and Aisha, unknown to each other , although living on the same street, run away from home, the pace quickens and a dramatic story ensues. Empathy and understanding and friendship all play a part in helping these young people find a metaphorical way home from their troubled pasts. (Ideally for Years 5 & 6)
