This chapter book with black and white illustrations is ideally pitched at readers in Years 4 or 5. It introduces the character Ellray Jakes, a likeable 8 year old African American boy, who is trying to work out strategies for dealing with a class bully and at the same time hoping to stay out of trouble for a week so as to earn the trip to Disneyland his father has promised him.. The plot is full of surprises and confounds his parents' worry that Ellray may be the target of racism in his largely white school. It is a fast-paced story, told in the first person, with many touches of humour and a real ear for playground dialogue.
