This picture book portrays a close-knit intergenerational relationship between CJ, a young African American boy, and his grandmother as they leave church and take a bus across town. Their conversation touches on sensitive issues around poverty and class as the young boy finds plenty to grumble about on this Sunday bus-ride to a run-down neighbourhood where they help out at a soup kitchen. CJ's complaints are skilfully deflected by his grandmother whose positive attitude to life helps lift his mood and teaches him to see beyond first impressions. The illustrations by Christian Robinson conjure up this urban landscape using silhouettes and cut-paper style collage to great effect.
