Long Walk to Freedom This picture book edition of Nelson Mandela's autobiography, specially abridged for children, presents his life story up until his election as President of South Africa. Combining full page colour illustrations and panels of text it gives a clear and accessible account of the formative experiences that shaped his life and politics, in particular, the introduction of apartheid laws from 1948 and the Sharpeville massacre of 1960, that led to the banning of the ANC, his trial and subsequent incarceration on Robben Island. The abridgement retains the sense of Mandela's own voice, giving his thoughts and feelings in a narrative which is both informative and moving.
