Illegal This graphic novel tells the story of Ebo, a 12 year old, who follows his brother, Kwame, on an epic journey from an impoverished village in Ghana, across the Sahara to Libya and over the Mediterranean towards Italy. Whilst adrift in a flimsy dinghy, the stages of Ebo's journey are recounted in a series of flashbacks which break off at moments of high drama and suspense. With minimal language, the story is conveyed through visual cues, with each narrative strand identified by a distinctive colour palette with its own atmosphere and dramatic effect. There are frequent cinematic shifts in perspective - close-ups on individual faces fearful for the safety of the crowded boat, are succeeded by aerial views of the vessel, tiny against the enormity of the sea. This is a very contemporary story, a wholly sympathetic depiction of the desperation of migrants, conceived in a format which both grabs attention and gives eloquent voice to the notion that no human being can be 'illegal'.
