This is a very simplified retelling for younger readers of Floella Benjamin's autobiography. It tells of her happy childhood with Marmie and Dardie and 5 siblings in their large house in Trinidad and the journey to England as part of the Windrush generation to a new home, which turns out to be just one room. Despite the lack of a warm welcome and dealing with racism in England, Floella and her family are seen to settle in little by little. Diane Ewen's watercolour and acrylic illustrations chart the physical and emotional journey beautifully:echoing the transition from the lush tropical colours of Trinidad to the long boat journey and finally to the more sombre colours of England.
