The Mexican festival of the 'Day of the Dead' is celebrated in rhyming verse in this picture book with joyful double-page illustrations showing the many small rituals that honour the dead on this special occasion. In many homes there are improvised altars, decorated with photographs and other mementoes; people gather for picnics in the cemetery alongside family graves which have been cleaned, lit with candles and decorated with flowers; children are given gifts of small sugar skulls. The climax comes with an exciting parade, with face painting, ghost costumes, music and dancing. An afterword gives more factual information on all these traditions.
