Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt The story of the Underground Railroad is told through a young girl's fashioning of a quilt which leads her to freedom. Clara, a slave on a Southern Plantation, saves scraps of coloured cloth for a quilt that becomes a secret map depicting the route of the path northwards, and eventually acts as a blueprint for others to emulate her escape. The text is accompanied by vivid, dramatic full-colour paintings by James Ransome.
