A welcome history of the Windrush and the many hundreds it brought from the Caribbean to help rebuild the UK after the Second World War. This book also explains how many from the British Colonies had already been in the UK as part of the Armed Forces and helped to win the war, but were not allowed to stay on after the war - one such was Sam King, an engineer in the RAF, who returned on the Windrush and later became the first black Mayor of the London Borough of Southwark. Although it was written before the Windrush scandal this black history book, covering the period of 1939 to 2018, includes information about the sometimes hostile reception but also the enormous contribution made by so many Caribbeans to this country. As well as illustrations in black, brown and white on every page there are also photographs and maps.
