Grandma and the Great Gourd In this lively retelling of a Bengali folktale, an old woman, known to everyone as Grandma, sets out to cross a dangerous strip of jungle to reach the house of her daughter. With echoes of Red Riding Hood, where a vulnerable figure is intercepted by a hungry animal in lonely countryside, Grandma suffers the attentions of a sly fox, a brown bear and a tiger, and as each waylays her, she must talk her way out of being eaten. Having promised each assailant that she will be plumper and tastier on her way home, the return journey calls for even more quick-thinking on the part of the old woman and her daughter. The story unfolds in rhythmic, colourful language, with repetition and onomatopoeia, and is well-matched by vibrant cut-paper style illustrations that incorporate many Indian motifs.
