This African American picture book version of the popular folktale featuring an enormous turnip is set in the American South, where Grandma Lena decides to plant turnip seeds in her garden. The whole family, including dog and baby, are needed to pull out the gigantic vegetable that Grandma Lena succeeds in growing, and she celebrates by serving it in a traditional meal to which all her friends and neighbours are invited.
