The artist Daniel Miyares uses beautiful watercolours to illustrate his interpretation of Langston Hughes' poem, Dream Variation. Two families in segregated 1950s America, one white, one black are shown in muted colours using separate seats on the bus and separate drinking fountains. The poem ends with a positive affirmation of the identity of the black child narrator and his dream of a world in which black and white children drink from the same stream. As the book progresses the full page illustrations become joyous in their use of colour. A book that can be read on different levels and which will generate more thoughtful discussions in older children.
