The second part of the trilogy about sisters Delphine, Vonetta and Fern. Having spent an eventful summer with their unconventional Black Panther mother, the girls return to Brooklyn and home life and the now all too restrictive and old fashioned rules laid down by Big Ma. The sisters are strong willed and animated personalities and Delphine, our eleven year old narrator, is pitch perfect in her rendition of their trials and tribulations: Uncle Darnell's return from Vietnam, Mr Mwila the new teacher from Zambia and Pa's new women's libber girlfriend Marva. Humour and heartbreak go hand in hand in this wonderfully evocative and readable novel.
