Crown: An Ode to the Fresh Cut This picture book composes a playful celebration of the boost to self-esteem of a sharp haircut as a young black boy describes the transforming magic of his trip to the barber shop in rhythmic colloquial prose, laced with ever more elaborate comic hyperbole. He arrives as a 'blank canvas', later to emerge as 'royalty', a 'blazing star', the epitome of cool. The vibrant colour illustrations work hard to match the swagger, sense of fun and high energy with which the experience is described and give form to the young boy's anticipation of the likely impact of his new look - which might just help him smash next day's geography exam, and is certain to provoke ripples of admiration throughout his school. The barber's shop itself is a crucible of positivity for the young boy: the setting for a rite of passage, and a place where he mixes with older customers, black men who impress him with their pride in their appearance and dedication to looking good, super stylish role-models he imagines to be captains of industry or celebrities.
