Sonya is delighted when her father gives her 3 fluffy chicks to raise and sets to work with great care to ensure they are housed, fed and watered. Along the way some hard lessons are learned - nature plays its part and a fox kills one of the hens. But there are also moments of delight, as when an egg hatches. The story is recounted against the backdrop of a loving and supportive family, a black father and white mother, who help the little girl understand how the fox has a family to look after too. Making use of watercolours and collage, the brightly coloured, gorgeous illustrations lovingly evoke family life in a rural setting.
