Malala's Magic Pencil As a child in a war torn region of Pakistan, Malala longed for a magic pencil, just like the boy on a TV show she watched, so she could re-draw and transform an unjust world. As she grows increasingly aware of the violence, poverty and gender inequality around her, writing does become the instrument by which she seeks to bring about change. When the Taliban try to force girls like her to abandon their schooling, she pens speeches and becomes a celebrated champion of the right to education for all children, so much so that the Taliban tried to assassinate her. The story is simply told, and combined with striking illustrations in ink and watercolour, is wholly successful in explaining human rights and activism to a younger readership.
