Leila in Saffron Friday night is when Leila and her family go to grandmother Naani's for dinner every week; 'the scent of warm nutty ghee' greeting them as she opens the door. So follows a gentle story in which Leila's uncertainties about liking herself are challenged as she cooks the best curry, luxuriates in the colours and smoothness of Naani's silk scarves and finally spins and sparkles in the saffron yellow one her grandmother wraps her in as ' each and every part of me comes together to make me who I am'. Leila's Pakistani heritage is beautifully reflected in Dinara Mirtalipova's gouache and acrylic illustrations, predominantly in saffron yellows, oranges and reds which detail traditional vessels and gorgeous fabrics.
