In this chapter book for younger readers, Ben is having to overcome his anxieties about the arrival of a new baby in his family. He wonders whether the baby will have brown skin like his father, white like his mother, or his own golden colour, then scares himself by dreaming of a baby with green hair and yellow eyes. There is much gentle humour as Ben's worries assume the form of an allergy to anything striped, and an aversion to excessive noise, such as is promised by his imminent birthday party. With the support of his parents and the unexpected help of an escaped snake, Ben emerges from this troubling - albeit eventful - time a stronger and less fearful character. The comic black and white illustrations throughout the text willl draw in the less confident reader.
