World is not a Rectangle, The The extraordinary designs of the architect Zaha Hadid are traced back to her childhood fascination with the landscapes, ruins and ancient cities of her native Iraq. This picture book pays tribute to her visionary achievements and determination to pursue her dreams despite prejudice over her gender or ethnicity. The simple narrative describes how her move to London and study of mathematics and architecture enabled her to give form to her dreams. The illustrations juxtapose images of some of her most famous buildings with the elements in nature that provided their inspiration, fulfilling her mantra that 'The world is not a rectangle'. Even the lines of text which incorporate direct quotation swoop and curl in homage to her buildings. An end-piece gives a summary of ten of her best known buildings and identifies their location.
