Mama Miti Napoli chooses a simple folkloric storytelling technique to visit the story/life of the Kenyan environmental activist and Nobel Prize winner Wangari Maathai. As individual women visit Wangari with problems such as dirty water and lack of food, she gives them seedlings of specific trees to plant, each of which address their particular predicament. We discover that 'mukuyu' trees act as natural filters to clean streams and 'mubiru muiru' trees have edible berries. The beautiful illustrations are the stand-out success of this book; Nelson uses a combination of oil paint (employed to powerful effect in depicting the faces which adds a dignity and sympathy to the subjects) and collages of fabulously coloured local fabrics powerful effect in depicting the faces. An afterword and glossary provide welcome information
