In the mid-18th century, when most of his peers were slaves, Benjamin Banneker grew up as a free black man on the family farm. Interested in maths and science from an early age, even constructing his own clock, he went on to become an expert on surveying and astronomy. In 1792 he published the almanac which was to make him famous, sending a copy to Thomas Jefferson, together with an argument against slavery. This straightforward biography, with many colour illustrations, is suitable for younger readers.
