Refugee Separated in time and place but connected by the common, brutal experience of being refugees, this book tells the stories of three children: Mahmoud and his family are fleeing civil war torn Aleppo in 2015, Isabel is escaping Castro's Cuba in 1994 and Josef and his family are on the run in Berlin as Jews become targets for persecution in 1939 Nazi Germany. Gratz skillfully interweaves the narratives of his three fictional protagonists whose dramatic and sometimes harrowing experiences are faithful to accounts of the historical periods in question and authentic in detail. 'Refugee' includes maps and an author's note concerning the truth behind the stories. This is a gripping read, ideally suited to Year 6 pupils.
