Journey of Dreams This fast-paced novel - full of vivid insights into another culture - dramatises the plight of Guatemalan families driven from their mountain villages during the violent army campaigns against indigenous peoples of the early 1980's and the workings of a modern equivalent of an Underground Railroad that helped a number of them find sanctuary in the USA. 13 year old Tomasa tells the story of how her family is torn apart by these events and how she sets out with her father and younger siblings on the trail of her mother and eldest brother who were forced to flee before them. Her account of their long and perilous journey is interwoven with stories told by her Papa and images from her dreams, elements essential to their survival, nurturing hope and the notion that loyalty, bravery and love can sometimes win against overwhelming odds.
