This picture book offers a compendium of wishing traditions as practised by children in different parts of the world. Inset into each double-page illustration of children engaged in the action of making a special wish is a panel of explanatory text and a short descriptive poem. We see children blowing out candles on cakes, throwing coins into fountains and wells, flying kites, puffing on dandelions, and playing with other lucky symbols such as eyelashes and feathers. An afterword locates each of the 15 traditions described in its country of origin and gives a brief historical explanation.
