Lights of Winter:Winter Celebrations around the World This simple picture book describes how people in different parts of the world celebrate light at the centre of festivals to ward off the gloom and darkness of the winter months. It ranges from the oldest winter festival of Zagmuk celebrated by the people of Ancient Mesopotamia, to the many customs marking the winter solstice, such as the Pagan Yule ceremony, the Saturnalia festival of Ancient Rome, Soyal of the Hopi Indians, the Chinese Festival of Lanterns, Hanukka, Divali, Christmas, the Mexican tradition of Los Posados, and the modern African-American marking of Kwanza. Each is described in a simple paragraph with a colour illustration on the adjacent page.
