An unusual and affecting Native American version of the Cinderella story in which a young Algonquin girl is known as Rough-Face due to scars caused by the harsh treatment of her older sisters. These disfigurements are shown to be skin deep, and she is rewarded for her perception of the beauty of the natural world by marriage to the most powerful of all chiefs. The illustrations further dramatise these notions of the visible and the unseen.
