The tale of Rhodopis and the rose-red slippers is said to be one of the world's oldest Cinderella stories, first recorded in Roman times: it concerns a Greek slave girl, treated unkindly by household servants, whose tiny slipper is stolen by a falcon and later dropped in the lap of the Pharoah, prompting him to search the land for the owner to make her queen of all Egypt. Illustrated throughout in colour by Ruth Heller.
